Police in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, have arrested a 75-year-old woman, Keiko Mori, after discovering the body of her daughter, which had allegedly been stored in a freezer for two decades.

Officers said the remains of an adult female were found on Tuesday inside a deep freezer at Mori’s residence. The body, dressed in a T-shirt and underwear, was reportedly placed face-down.

Mori told investigators the deceased was her daughter, Makiko, born in 1975, who would have been about 49 or 50 years old if alive. She allegedly confessed that she kept the remains in the freezer to contain the smell following her daughter’s death.

Police confirmed the body showed signs of advanced decomposition and have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

According to reports, Mori who recently lost her husband and now lives alone went to the police station with a relative to disclose the situation. She was arrested on suspicion of abandoning a body.

Authorities have yet to confirm how many children Mori had or whether her other family members were aware of the incident.
