Okinbaloye: I’m Not Afraid of Wike, Threats Have No Place in Democracy

Channels Television anchor, Seun Okinbaloye, has declared that he is not intimidated by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following the minister’s controversial remarks against him.
Wike had reportedly said he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” the journalist over comments suggesting that a one-party system could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
The statement has drawn widespread criticism, with Amnesty International describing it as “reckless and violent language.”
Responding on Sunday, Okinbaloye reaffirmed his position, stressing that democracy must allow space for differing opinions without threats or intimidation.
“The fact remains that our democracy is in danger if we allow one-way traffic in balloting,” he said.
He noted that his concerns were not directed at any specific political group but at all Nigerians committed to the country’s democratic development.
“This is not a warning to the opposition or the ruling party, but to all Nigerians who believe in the progress of our nation,” he added.
Okinbaloye disclosed that the FCT minister later reached out to clarify that his remarks were not intended as conveyed. While acknowledging the clarification, the broadcaster maintained that threats have no place in democratic discourse.
“Violent rhetoric or threats are never appropriate responses to dissent in a democratic society,” he said.
He further stated: “Let me be clear: I am not afraid and will never be intimidated. We may disagree, and as humans we may err, but dissent must never descend into hostility or harm.”
Okinbaloye reiterated his commitment to journalism, vowing to continue asking critical questions and holding those in power accountable.
