Flood Alert: FCT, Surrounding States on Edge as Heavy Rains Loom

The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a red alert for possible heavy rainfall and flash floods in Abuja and neighboring states, warning residents to brace for impact between July 31 and August 4, 2025.

According to the ministry’s Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS), 11 flood-prone areas within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) including Asokoro, Gwarinpa, Wuse 1 & 2, Nyanya, Guzape, Gwagwalada, and the Central Business District are likely to experience intense downpours that could disrupt daily life and damage property.

In a swift response, the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) announced that its Search and Rescue Team is on red alert to tackle emergencies.

“Don’t drive or walk through floodwaters. Wait or take a safer route, and clear your drains to allow water flow,” warned Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, Acting Director General of FEMD.

Neighboring states are not spared either. The flood alert extends to Niger, Nasarawa, and Kaduna States, with several high-risk locations flagged, including:

Niger State: Suleja, Mashegu, Sarkin Pawa, Rijau; Nasarawa State: Mararaba, Wamba, Rukubi, Odogbo, Agima; Kaduna State: Zaria, Jaji, Kauru, Kachia, Buruku.

This heightened warning comes just days after torrential rains in Yola, Adamawa State, left five people dead and over 55 injured, further intensifying concerns about the looming weather threat.

Authorities are urging residents in all identified flood-prone zones to stay alert, avoid risk-prone areas, and adopt safety measures to prevent loss of lives and property.
