Dangote Cement Extends Scholarship Scheme to Oworo Students

Dangote Cement Plc has expanded its scholarship programme beyond its immediate host communities to cover students from the Oworo communities in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The gesture, unveiled at a ceremony in Obajana on Monday, was facilitated through the Oworo Development Association (ODA), marking a new phase in the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Speaking at the event, Plant Director, Azad Nawabuddin, said although the Oworo communities are not part of the company’s direct catchment areas, Dangote Cement chose to extend the scholarship scheme in recognition of the wider community’s needs.

“Over the years, we have consistently run a scholarship programme for our host communities in line with the Community Development Agreement. This extension to Oworo students reflects our commitment to giving back and investing in education,” he said. Nawabuddin also announced that the company would provide five boreholes across different Oworo communities to improve access to potable water.

The company’s General Manager of Social Performance, Mr. Ademola Adeyemi, disclosed that 50 students were selected as the first beneficiaries for the 2025/2026 academic session, with 26 females and 24 males. He assured that each student would continue to benefit until the completion of their programmes, provided they maintain satisfactory academic performance.

“This event is not just about financial support. It is about investing in the future of our community. These scholarships symbolize hope, opportunity, and the belief that every child deserves a chance to pursue their dreams,” Adeyemi added.

Commending the initiative, Alhaji Jibril Odoga Ibrahim, President of the ODA, described the scholarship as “a dream come true” for the people of Oworo. He urged the beneficiaries to take the opportunity seriously, adding that education is a seed that can transform the community.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Education, represented by Mrs. Omolayo Bilkisu, Acting Permanent Secretary, praised Dangote Cement for complementing government’s efforts in education. She stressed that public-private partnerships remain vital to advancing the state’s development goals.

Traditional rulers, including the Olu of Apata, Oba Federick Balogun, and the Obaro of Ogbagon, Oba Ahmodu Umar Adoga, lauded the company for supporting education and community development. They noted that the gesture would relieve parents, motivate students, and inspire future leaders in Oworo communities.

Similarly, Hon. Victoria Temitope, Councillor representing Oworo Ward in Lokoja LGA, urged the beneficiaries to remain focused and hardworking. “You are the future doctors, engineers, teachers, and leaders who will bring pride and progress back to the Oworo communities,” she said.

The scholarship scheme, alongside other CSR projects such as the provision of boreholes, underscores Dangote Cement’s commitment to empowering communities and promoting sustainable development across Kogi State.
