INEC Unveils Final Register of 2.8m Voters for Anambra Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final register of voters for the November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election, putting the figure at 2,802,790 registered voters.

The commission also confirmed receiving 171 letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties, following the receipt of 19 new letters of intent as of September 3.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, September 4, after a meeting of the Commission in Abuja.

According to him, the Commission carried out voter registration in the 326 Wards across the State from July 8 to 20, 2025, during which 168,187 citizens registered as new voters.

Olumekun noted that at the end of the registration exercise, the Commission set aside one week (July 26 – August 1) to display the list of new registrants in all the Wards for claims and objections by citizens in line with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

“Furthermore, the Commission scrutinised the list using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to detect invalid registrations. At the end of the process, 27,817 records were found to be double or multiple registrations and removed from the list.

“Consequently, the figure for new registrants now stands at 140,370, while valid applications for transfer into the State are 5,983, making a total of 146,353 new voters.

“Prior to the recent voter registration, Anambra State had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the new registrants, the voters’ roll for the State now stands at 2,802,790.”

A breakdown of the register shows that Idemili North has the highest voter population with 246,318 (8.79%), followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73%), and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71%). The least populated are Dunukofia with 83,580 (2.98%) and Anambra West with 71,332 (2.55%).

“The distribution of new voters by Local Government Area is uploaded to our website and other official platforms for public information,” Olumekun added.

He assured new voters, as well as those who applied for transfers or replacement of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), that their cards would be ready for collection well ahead of the election, which is now 63 days away.

Meanwhile INEC also revealed that the number of associations seeking to be registered as political parties has risen to 171, following the receipt of 19 new letters of intent as of September 3.

He explained that the committee reviewing the applications has prepared recommendations for final consideration by the Commission but appealed to the associations to remain patient as the process is concluded.

Olumekun cautioned against frequent changes of acronyms, logos, and addresses, as well as multiple submissions by the same group or leadership tussles, which he said were slowing down the process.

“We wish to reassure the associations that the Commission will treat all applications fairly, while urging them to assist the process by remaining consistent,” he stated.
