IGP Summons Officers in Viral Stop-and-Search Video to Report to Abuja   Headquarters

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed officers captured in a viral stop-and-search video in Lagos to report to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.

The directive follows widespread public outrage over footage circulating on social media, which allegedly shows police officers harassing civilians during a roadside operation in the Satellite Town area of Lagos.

Force Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Giwa, disclosed this in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, noting that the affected officers have been ordered to appear before authorities on Wednesday.

In the viral video, the officers were seen stopping a vehicle, ordering occupants to alight, and taking one individual aside for a search away from the parked vehicle, raising concerns over procedure and citizens’ rights.

Giwa said the move by the police leadership underscores its commitment to accountability and professionalism, stressing the need for officers to exercise restraint and respect fundamental rights while carrying out their duties.

“The Nigeria Police Force values concerns of the public, which continue to reinforce our commitment to accountability and professional standards,” he said.

He reaffirmed the Force’s dedication to discipline, justice, and institutional integrity, assuring Nigerians that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the disciplinary process.
