Sea Robbery Attempt Shakes Nigerian Waters After 4 Year Lull
In a daring twist of the high seas, Nigerian waters witnessed their first attempted sea robbery in four years and it unfolded in dramatic fashion.
In a statement released by the Head of Public Relations at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Osagie Edward, the agency confirmed that this was the first such incident since 2021.
On Tuesday, April 21st, 2025, officials at NIMASA’s C4i surveillance center detected the illegal boarding of the Marshall Islands-flagged chemical tanker, MT Sea Panther, off the southwest coast of Brass, Nigeria.
According to reports, four unidentified assailants boarded the vessel and made off with personal belongings belonging to crew members. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all crew members remained safe throughout the ordeal.
The Sea Panther has since safely exited Nigerian waters, thanks to the timely intervention and round the clock monitoring by maritime authorities.
NIMASA has assured the public that it is working closely with relevant security agencies to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. The investigation is currently ongoing.
