Power Shift at INEC: May Agbamuche Becomes Acting Chairman as Yakubu Hands Over

The National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially handed over the leadership of the commission to National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as the Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive head.

Professor Yakubu made the announcement on Tuesday during an ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, Agbamuche-Mbu, who represents the South-South region in the Commission, is the oldest serving National Commissioner and, by virtue of that, assumes the role of Acting Chairman in line with INEC’s internal succession protocol.

In his brief remarks, Professor Yakubu expressed confidence in Agbamuche-Mbu’s capacity to steer the affairs of the electoral body during the transition period. He appealed to the commissioners, directors, and other staff of the Commission to extend their full cooperation and support to her.

“INEC remains a continuous institution, and I am confident that under the acting chairmanship of Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, the Commission will maintain its focus on deepening the credibility and transparency of our electoral process,” he said.

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned lawyer and administrator, has served in INEC since 2016 and has been instrumental in several electoral reforms and stakeholder engagements across the country.

Her appointment as Acting Chairman comes at a critical time as the Commission continues preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and reviews of the 2023 general election.
