Nigeria: Presidency Debunks Fake Trump Statement on Maiduguri Bombings

Nigeria’s presidency has dismissed as false a viral social media post claiming that former U.S. President Donald Trump reacted to the recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri with harsh criticism of Nigeria’s leadership.

The government’s response comes amid heightened tensions following the deadly attacks in Maiduguri, a city long affected by insurgency linked to extremist groups in northeastern Nigeria.

Officials warn that misinformation, especially during periods of crisis, can inflame public sentiment and undermine coordinated security and emergency responses.

Coordinated suicide bombings in Maiduguri on Monday, March 16, 2026, had resulted in at least 23 deaths and 108 injuries.

While President Tinubu described the attacks as a “desperate” act by terrorists and ordered security chiefs to the area, the Presidency dismissed the viral, fake regarding a Trump reaction, urging the public to disregard it.

The widely circulated message, written in a style resembling Trump’s social media tone, alleged that he described the situation in Nigeria as a “total disaster,” referenced multiple coordinated attacks, and criticized Tinubu for being abroad during a national emergency.

However, Nigerian authorities have categorically denied the authenticity of the statement, labeling it fake and urging the public to disregard it.

According to the presidency, there is no record of such a post on any verified social media account belonging to Trump.

Citizens have been advised to rely only on verified sources and official channels for updates, as the spread of fabricated statements attributed to global figures risks distorting public understanding of both the security situation and international reactions.
